How To: Maintain a Perfect Blowout!

You paid for it, why not keep it for as long as possible!

At BLO/OUT we see hundreds of women every week. From college students to professionals, the most common question our guests ask when booking is "how long will my blow dry last"? and "how do I maintain my hair at home"?

If you are anything like me, most times i just throw it up at night and hope my style stays in place for the next day. It very rarely works. If you want your style to stay as fresh as it was on day one there are some steps you need to take to ensure that. With maintenance, a blowout should last anywhere from 3-6 days depending on factors such as weather and the natural oils your scalp produces which is typically the number one killer for gorgeous tresses! In this post, I am going to take you through a full week's worth of maintenance tips with BLO/OUT stylist Jaiza and show you how she kept her locks as beautiful on day five as they were on day one!

DAY 1

Jaize decided to go for one of our signature styles "The Astoria" this style is super popular as it is full bodied with a bit of volume at the top and movement towards the ends. This look is perfect for everyone and gives you just enough glam for your work week!
Products used to achieve this look: Moroccanoil: Blow Dry Concentrate $28.00 &  Moroccanoil: Volumizing Mousse $26.00 products available online at BLO/OUT Blow Dry Bar

That night, Jaiza wrapped her hair in a bun using just two Bobbi pins and slept with a silk pillow case. If you guys don't know about silk pillow cases or head scarfs yet..YOU NEED TO! They are truly a game changer! As an ultra smooth fabric, silk pillowcases and scarves won't catch hair the way manmade fabrics can, hair glides on silk rather than rubs. This results in less fly aways and frizz! Silk fabric also has skin benefits, but we can get into that later. That night Jaiza was off to sleep while I was up wondering what her hair would look like the next day!
DAY 2
This is day two guys! I REPEAT..this is day two!! Who gave this woman such beautiful hair and where can I get it at? Jaiza said all she did in the morning was take the bun out and run her fingers through her hair. Really Jaiza? That's all you needed to do? Meanwhile I woke up that morning looking like Anne Hathaways character in The Princess Diaries pre makeover!
Once I got over my jealousy, she told me that today she was just going to run some MoroccanOil through her ends to ensure that they didn't dry out. That night, she did the same thing as the previous! One bun, two pins, silk pillow case.
DAY 3
This is by far my favorite day! We have some texture from the natural oils and I personally like the "not so clean" feeling my hair gains at this point. On this day Jaiza said that she used dry shampoo since she noticed her scalp staring to retain a little extra oil than she typically likes. She still has not put any heat to her hair at this point and the style still looks beautiful! I felt her hair and it was as silky as day one thanks to her use of Moroccanoil from mid shaft to ends and the dry shampoo she used that morning.

Speaking of dry shampoo, lets delve into that a bit shall we?

I'm gonna let you guys in on a little secret: HAIR STYLISTS HATE DOING THEIR OWN HAIR! Most days, their head has more dry shampoo in it than hair. I cannot stress to you enough how much of a game changer this stuff is! I have heard some concerns with the build of dry shampoo on the scalp clogging the pores and compromising follicles leading to pimples. I did my research and learned that is only if you go exceptionally long (over a month or more) without washing your hair and using dry shampoo daily.

So for ladies like us who just want to extend our styles as long as possible, dry shampoos are where it's at! It works instantly and most brands smell AMAZING!!! My personal favorite is the one Jaiza used! (Wella's Dry Me Dry Shampoo $19.00 plus tax at BLO/OUT BLOW DRY BAR)  This product creates volume and a manageable matte texture to refresh your hair and absorb oil with a Tapioca starch formula!

To use: Seperate dry hair at the root and apply your favorite shampoo directly and evenly. Buff product out with your fingers and brush to distribute. Style as you wish and watch your hair transform!!

DAY 4
By day four some of our movement has dropped! This is where you can make the decision to freshen them up with a quick spot curl or let your natural locks flow freely like the beauty they truly are. Jaiza chose the later, and I don't blame her! She is still using the same "pin, bun, pillow case" technique we mentioned earlier. I personally love this point because it looks like we did two separate styles within the same week. Jaiza did use a bit more dry shampoo on this day but not as much as the previous. She also brushed through the bottom portion of her hair since it became a bit tangled throughout  the day.

Wondering how her hair is staying beautiful even through the steamy showers we all love after a long day?! SHOWER CAPS! Yes, I know they're not the prettiest things to wear, but they are well worth it! Our favorite is BLOW PRO "Perfect Shower Cap"

The perfect shower cap is an innovative cap designed to protect and prolong blow dry-styled hair with its terry cloth liner that soaks up shower steam and moisture before it tackles your tresses. It's oversized to provide 360-degree protection by fitting over your entire hairline and features a moisture-blocking seal along the edges to provide a snug yet comfy fit.

How to use: To optimize the life of your style, gather your hair above your head, twist and clip prior to putting on the shower cap. Store it inside-out when not in use.

Pick yours up at your favorite BLO/OUT Blow Dry Bar location or via the BLO/OUT Online Shop! ($20)
DAY 5
By day five Jaiza's hair has held extremely well. This particular day was a busy Saturday here at BLO/OUT and I caught her in between clients! Again, she just ran some MoroccanOil through her ends and brushed the product through.

On day five, I also recommend a cute ponytail
 or a really fun braid!

These styles are great for day five and are perfect for a date night, or even better a night out with your girls!

There are so many different ways to maintain your blow out. Once you find what works for you, there is no going back to daily styling! With all of the elements our hair deals with everyday, it's not worth it to add daily heat styling on top of it especially if you're prone to breakage like I am.

Preserving a weekly blow out not only makes you look and feel beautiful, but is healthier for your hair in the long run. I'd love to hear your feedback and tips that you've learned to keep your style in tact throughout the week!

As always leave me a comment below :)
