BLO/OUT's list of products to help you fight winter skin issues

Sadly Summer has come to an end 😦  and it's time to start your war against the dreaded Fall/Winter skin issues that most of us battle each year! I personally have suffered from sensitive skin my entire life and envy those girls who can just cleanse and go! With the cooler/dry months ahead of us, it is time for us to start prepping our skin for the inevitable!

It begins with cleansers

Eucerine Skin Calming Body Wash - $8.99 (Walgreens)
Soaps and body washes wreak havoc on our skin! Typically in the summer months you can get away with the drying agents that are added in the fragrance body washes we all love since there is so much moisture in the air. Sadly, once October rolls around something completely different starts to happen. Those body washes start to cause our skin to dry/crack especially if you are a sufferer of skin issues such as eczema or psoriasis.

Beginning as early as September I throw my beloved fragranced body washes out the window and begin to cleanse with my all time favorite and life saving Eucerine Skin Calming Body Wash! I cannot speak highly enough about this product! My dermatologist recommended it to me years ago when I expressed my skin issues and it has been my go to ever since! This product fits any budget and take it from me, you will be obsessed with how fast your skin starts to recover.

Exfoliation is a must!

Kiehls Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub in Lavender - $18 (Any Kiehls store or eBay)
Exfoliating is often forgotten in our hygiene regimen especially when it comes to the body! Exfoliating is super important especially in the cooler months when dead skin tends to linger a bit longer than we're used to.

I LOVE Kiehls Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub in Lavender. This scrub is infused with aloe and chamomile which help calm the skin as well as heal redness. Exfoliators should only be used at max twice a week. I personally use this product after a long work week when I need some extra pampering!

Tip: Try using exfoliating gloves to apply this product. These help to gently wipe away dead skin without the worry of scrubbing too hard! You can find them at any beauty store or pharmacy. I use the Earth Therapeutics Exfoliating Hydro Glove that can be purchased at Ulta for under $7!

Moisturize!!

Organic Coconut Oil - Price varies (available at most grocery stores)
Let's face it, nothing feels better than hopping out of the shower/bath and rubbing your sore muscles down with some oil or lotion! Sadly as with cleansers, the dyes and fragrances in lotions can sometimes cause more harm than good. Winter gives us all the opportunity to embrace our inner nature lover and whip out the all natural products!

The benefits of coconut oil for the skin and body are almost unmatched! Coconut oil is used in many natural beauty products from hair to body and even nails, and for good reason: It's naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal, coconut oil for skin is an excellent moisturizer! It can penetrate hair better than other oils so it's even great for shaving! Not to mention it smells like the island you wish you were on right now!
Hempz Seed Lotion - $23.00 (Ulta)
People who don't know the benefits of hemp seed oil are really missing out! Lotions that contain hemp seed oil provide the skin with beneficial fatty acids. These acids bolster your skin's suppleness and help maintain its normal functions and appearance. Hemp seed oil has also been known to help the healing processes of eczema which typically flares in the fall/winter!

Hand Skin Care

This section is going to be really helpful for those of us who's hands are constantly in water like busy moms or people working in the salon industry!

Because our hands are constantly exposed to the drying effects of every day life, they are more susceptible to cracking and drying more so than other areas of our bodies that remain covered. Take it from a person who works around hair stylists daily, their hands take a beating!

One product remains at our salon for instances like this! The ever so amazing, O'Keefes Working Hands Cream
O'Keefes Working Hands Cream - $6.99 (CVS)
If you have not tried this, you need to! It soothes almost instantly and can be used on the hands as well as the bottoms of your feet. I can go on and on about my love for this product but seriously, try it and thank me later!

Bath Additives

Soaking in a bath for an hour sounds amazing in theory but let's face it, it tends to dry us out! Especially in the cooler months, quick showers no longer than 10 minutes in lukewarm water is what most dermatologists recommend.

But, sometimes we just NEED a bath! Whether it's to unwind from a crazy work week or just to escape in our own space for even half an hour can work wonders on the mind. For those times, try these products:
Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment - $5.29 (Amazon)
This stuff saved my life after an allergic reaction I had to a detergent. Which seems to happen a lot to people with sensitive skin. Colloidal oatmeal has many benefits, probably the reason why our mothers have been using this for generations. From moisturizing to defending the skin against the elements, this product is a go to for anyone suffering from the "winter itch"!

Just poor a packet into your bath and relax.
Milk & Honey
Combining milk and honey in your bath can work wonders for the skin. Milk is great for nourishing and exfoliating, while honey is super hydrating and has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

These ingredients together will help soothe your skin in no time!

To use:
  1. Pour a half-cup of raw organic honey into a cup.
  2. Next, pour boiling water into it and stir until it melts.
  3. Add 1-2 cups of milk into the mug (depending on how big it is) and stir them together.
  4. Add the mixture to running water and enjoy!

For those of us who have no time to sit there and boil water my favorite product with these active ingredients is:
Laura Merciers Creme Brûlée Honey Bath  - $45 (Amazon)
This product may be a little pricy for some but it is so worth the money! As an Allure Magazine Best of Beauty winner this honey scented moisture bath will leave your body feeling nourished and moisturized in minutes.
I hope this post helps you all gain some insight on products that have actually helped me deal with the changes that happen to my skin in the Fall and Winter!

I know it can be super annoying and sometimes worrying but just know, you are not alone! I would LOVE to hear about some tips you guys use to combat the elements in the cooler months. As always, please comment below!
