Follow these 5 professional tips to maintain hair health in Winter!

With fall in full effect its time to start prepping your hair for the changes that are about to happen! Rather than having to worry about humidity causing our hair to frizz the way it does in the summer months, lowered moisture in the air during winter causes our hair and scalp to become dry, damaged, and brittle! I spoke with the BLO/OUT pros and took their advice and recommendations.

Here's my review of the steps and products that will help you maintain healthy, moisturized hair and scalp all season long!

1. Wash Your Hair

I talked to BLO/OUT's top styling pros and they recommend to keep shampooing to a minimum during the winter, about twice weekly. My hair is super thick so its actually not a problem for me to get away with this. Some women NEED to wash their hair more often due to natural oils being more visible on thinner hair and the dreaded "greasy hair" beginning day one post blow out.

The BLO/OUT pros recommended using lightweight moisture enriched products. These types of shampoo will hydrate the hair and scalp without weighing it down or causing your hair to look too oily. Shampoos like this also work amazing for women like me with a thicker texture who's hair tends to suck up any products we put in it:
PUREOLOGY HYDRATE SHAMPOO ($28.00 ULTA)
This shampoo gently cleanses without stripping color. The zero Sulfate formula delivers a rich lather, while infusing hair with essential hydration, your hair will feel normal and stay hydrated.
MOROCCANOIL MOISTURE REPAIR SHAMPOO ($25.00 AT BLO/OUT BLOW DRY BAR)
The Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo is a daily care formula designed to repair weakened or damaged hair. It restores the health of hair by infusing it with reparative proteins to mend broken hairs while restoring elasticity, moisture and manageability. However, using it regularly in Winter will deter damage and maintain hair health throughout the dry, cold winter.

2. Condition Your Hair

Conditioning is MUST! The wind and climate cause the cuticles of our hair to become damaged, leaving it dull and brittle. The effects of this are often seen in our color treated hair as well. Less moisture means less shine and who wants that?? Moisture is the running theme this season and conditioning is the best way to add that in no time :) Here are some of the products I managed to squeeze out of the BLO/OUT pros:
BIOSILK HYDRATING THERAPY ($15.00 at ULTA)
The BioSilk Hydrating Therapy Conditioner restores moisture levels in the hair with maracuja oil and silk for added strength. Rich conditioning elements of quinoa make dangling effortless, leaving dry unruly hair textures soft and hydrated. I know this sounds like a great salad recipe but it really works wonders!
MOROCCANOIL HYDRATING CONDITIONER ( $21.00 at BLO/OUT BLOW DRY BAR)
The Moroccanoil Hydrating Conditioner is infused with replenishing nutrients to protect and maintain hair's natural moisture balance. Although this sounds generic, the Argan oil really does wonders to keep your hair healthy and shiny.
PRO TIPS:
  • FOR FINER HAIR: Remember to only apply conditioner from mid shaft to ends ensuring that the scalp will not retain any added oils weighing hair down.
  • FOR THICKER/COURSE HAIR TEXTURE: Don't be afraid to add this all over the head! Your hair and scalp need all the moisture it can get. Leave conditioner on for up to 3 minutes, rinse and enjoy your newly hydrated tresses!

3. Take Care of Your Scalp

Just as much as our skin gets dry in winter so does our scalp. It's way worse with our scalp though because our scalp flakes and can lead to embarrassing flakes flying around. Let's keep the snow outside and use these dry scalp treatments to keep us flake free!
TEA TREE OIL (can be found at any local pharmacy or health care store)
Using tea tree oil is one of the best treatments people can give for their hair and scalp. With the antiseptic capabilities of tea tree oil and many other of its benefits, one cannot go wrong choosing this wonderful natural product for the best care of hair and scalp. Tea tree oil is extremely effective for hair and scalp health, whether its dandruff, split ends, fungal infection, itchy or other scalp concerns. The oil from tea tree is well known for its effective treatment of viral and bacterial infections, it's these attributes that leave your hair protected against many forms of scalp irritants.

TO APPLY:
  1. Take a small application bottle and fill it with 3/4 full of oil.
  2. Add 10 -15 drops of tea tree oil in it and mix it well
  3. Apply this to your scalp and hair
  4. Massage it gently for few minutes to make oil saturated all over the scalp
  5. Leave it for few hours or overnight (for better results)
  6. You will feel some tingling effect on your scalp but don’t worry about it
  7. Wash your hair with shampoo and apply conditioner.
MOROCCANOIL DRY SCALP TREATMENT ($36.00 at BLO/OUT BLOW DRY BAR)
The Moroccanoil scalp treatment addresses the needs of a dry and flaky scalp, instantly relieving irritation, dryness and itchiness. Moroccanoil® Dry Scalp Treatment works to restore scalp imbalances and help relieve scalp irritation while revitalizing the hair. The lightweight but concentrated formula is infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil and lavender and geranium essential oils to nourish and soothe the skin. Salicylic acid gently exfoliates to help reduce flakiness while improving circulation. Hair reaps the benefits, getting a dose of vitality and shine.

HOW TO APPLY:
Separate hair into four equal sections. Apply 3–6 drops of Moroccanoil® Dry Scalp Treatment onto scalp around each section. Massage product into scalp and leave on for 5–10 minutes. Comb through, then rinse. Follow with the appropriate Moroccanoil shampoo and conditioner. Use weekly to start and less frequently as condition improves. TIP: For scalps that are sensitive to color, use this product before a color service to protect scalp and eliminate itchiness. Moroccanoil Dry Scalp Treatment also provides soothing relief to tight scalps when hair extensions are being removed.

4. Treat Your Hair

As we mentioned earlier the cold weather and elements of winter tend to cause hair to become dry and brittle. The going trend for this season is MOISTURE!

Hair treatments are a great way to treat your hair as well as relax after a long week! The BLO/OUT pros typically use hydrating treatments on our clients that need a hair refresher as well as a little extra luxury and pampering. These conditioning treatments are specifically designed to leave hair feeling soft, manageable, and shiny! They are a great way to the infuse added nourishment that your hair is lacking in the cooler months!

The BLO/OUT pros recommended products are:
IT'S A 10 MIRACLE HAIR MASK ($30.00 at ULTA)
Developed to respond to the demands of today's color treated, heat styled, and otherwise damaged hair, It's a 10 Miracle Hair Mask is a simple-to-use, conditioning treatment made to enhance softness and smoothness. Flexible enough to be used as a daily conditioner and also intensive enough to be used as a periodic deep-conditioning treatment, the Miracle Hair Mask delivers unparalleled results for dry, damaged, or over-processed hair

FOR USE
:
Apply a medium palm-sized amount all over hair, and comb through. Wrap with plastic and a damp warm towel and leave under heat for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and follow with a cool-water rinse if desired.
MOROCCANOIL INTENSE HYDRATING MASK  ($29.00 at BLO/OUT BLOW DRY BAR)
The Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask is a high-performance, rich and creamy deep conditioner formulated for medium to thick, dry hair. Infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil and nourishing ingredients, it hydrates and conditions while dramatically improving hair's texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.

TO USE:

Apply a generous amount of Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask to towel-dried hair and comb through. Leave on for 5–7 minutes and rinse thoroughly. No heat required. Use 1–2 times weekly.

TIP: For deeper conditioning, mix in a few drops of Moroccanoil Treatment when using this hair mask.

5. Humidify Your Hair

A humidifiers sole purpose is adding moisture into the air which is exactly what we need in the winter! We all know about humidifiers benefits for the skin and body but rarely is hair mentioned in these conversations! And well, it should be!

A humidifier will help to keep more moisture in the air during those harsh winter months, which in turn will help keep our hair from drying out too fast. I am OBSESSED with humidifiers and personally sleep with one every night for its multiple benefits.

My favorite one is:
CRANE DROP ULTRASONIC COOL MIST HUMIDIFIER ($49.99 at TARGET)

I LOVE this product! On nights when I feel like I need to unwind, I add some essential oils like eucalyptus or lavender and it puts me right to sleep! Since using a humidifier, I have noticed that my hair is less brittle, coarse, and dull in the winter months. This thing is worth every penny and will have you and your hair feeling healthier in no time :)

The changes that happen to our hair and scalp in the winter sucks, but one good thing about winter is that styles last so much longer! Gone are the days when doing our hair is pointless because it either falls, or frizzes the second we step foot outside! Winter gives us all the chance to be the lazy girls we truly are and not have to wash our hair as often!

We get to play around with cute hats, our BLO/OUTs last longer, and wearing our hair down is actually possible! Using some of these tips will ensure your hair is shiny, moisturized, and gorgeous for the next few months!

As always, leave a comment below and let me know what you do to fight the elements in the winter :)

XOXO

At BLO/OUT we see hundreds of women every week. From college students to professionals, the most common question our guests ask when booking is "how long will my blow dry last"? and "how do I maintain my hair at home"?

If you are anything like me, most times i just throw it up at night and hope my style stays in place for the next day. It very rarely works. If you want your style to stay as fresh as it was on day one there are some steps you need to take to ensure that. With maintenance, a blowout should last anywhere from 3-6 days depending on factors such as weather and the natural oils your scalp produces which is typically the number one killer for gorgeous tresses! In this post, I am going to take you through a full week's worth of maintenance tips with BLO/OUT stylist Jaiza and show you how she kept her locks as beautiful on day five as they were on day one!

DAY 1

Jaize decided to go for one of our signature styles "The Astoria" this style is super popular as it is full bodied with a bit of volume at the top and movement towards the ends. This look is perfect for everyone and gives you just enough glam for your work week!

This past Wednesday Mix 106.1's Chio in The Morning remarried his ex wife Shawn and BLO/OUT was there to make sure the bride was perfectly styled!

Love is in the air for Mix 106.1’s “Chio in the Morning.” In 2014, the veteran on-air personality divorced Shawn, his wife of 25 years. True love prevailed and the couple reunited this year. Chio and Shawn officially got remarried, and two lucky Mix 106.1 listeners brought their fiancés to participate in the ceremony, reception, and a special afternoon with Andy Grammer and Gavin Degraw. The blessed event took place October 19, 2016 live on Fox 29’s “Good Day Philadelphia” officiated by host Mike Jerrick. A Mix 106.1 panel selected the two couples among hundreds who uploaded Instagram videos about why they wanted to tie the knot or renew their vows with Chio.

BLO/OUT Blow Dry Bar was chosen as the exclusive provider of hair and makeup services for the event and we rocked it! Check out the video above and some of the pics below of the event and don't forget to book BLO/OUT's Event Team for your event and wedding beauty services!

Recently, while working with a client she asked me "If you had to pick one product to use for the rest of your life what would it be?" I thought to myself "One product? Like forever? Forever ever?" There is absolutely no way that I could pick just one.

With so many amazing lines out there is it possible to have just one favorite? For me the answer is no! I am constantly hunting down the cult classics (like Ubran Decays Naked Palettes, what beauty lover didn't want these when they came out?) or products reviewed by other beauty bloggers to test out.

After some thinking, I finally narrowed my list down to ten products I absolutely could not live without! The products that I am about to review are my go to's for myself as well as my beautiful clients! They're all super versatile and I find work amazing for all skin types and tones. Let's get started...
